A court in Bogra placed five people on different terms of remand on Monday in two cases filed for shaving the heads of a female student along with her mother after the rape of the girl allegedly by a local Sramik League leader.

Councillor Marzia Hasan Rumki, also sister-in-law of accused Sramik League leader Tufan Sarker, was put on a four-day remand while four others -- Tufan’s wife Asha Sarker, his mother-in-law Rumi Khanam, driver Jitu and associate Munna –-- were placed on a three-day remand each, reports UNB.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Shyam Sundar Roy passed the order after police produced them before the court seeking seven days’ remand for each of them.

With this, eight accused have been remanded in connection with the incident.

Meanwhile, police super of Bogra Asaduzzaman told a press briefing that they arrested the barber who helped Tufan and his family members shave the heads of the girl and her mother.

Detectives arrested Rumki and her mother Rumi from Pabna district while Tufan’s father Ronu from his house at Badurtala in the district town on Sunday night.

On July 17, Tufan took the girl to his house at Badurtala in the district town promising to arrange her admission into a local college and raped her there.

As the girl went to Rumki’s house, seeking justice, his supporters -- Atiqur, Rupom and Azam -- picked the girl up along with her mother from their house at Namajgarh in the town and took them to the house of Tufan on Friday noon.

Tufan, Asha, Marzia and Rumi allegedly beat the girl and her mother with sticks and got cut down the hair of their heads. At one stage, the offenders got their heads shaved done by a barber.

Later, the girl’s mother filed two cases against 10 people, including Tufan, his wife and sister-in-law, with the Sadar Police Station on Friday night.
