Bogura jute farmers get fair prices

BOGURA, Sep 27:  Farmers of Sonatola and Sarikandi upazilas of the district are delighted over the good market price of jute this season.

Spending Tk 1200 to Tk 1300 to produce a maund of jute, the peasants are making Tk 600 to Tk 800 profit when they had made some Tk 300 to Tk 400 growing a maund last year.

Farmers said some Tk 9,000 to Tk 10,000 is needed to produce jute on a bigha of land.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) officials, farmers have taken over 3,500 hectares of land under jute cultivation aiming 0.2 million tonnes of yield this season.

DAE again said they have already achieved around 0.23 million tonnes of yield.

Government has fixed Tk 1500 for each maund of crop but the market price has already excided target across the area. The wholesalers from the different adjacent districts rush in the big haats and bazars of the district to purchase jute.

"I have cultivated Tosha jute variety on 33 decimal of land spending around Tk 13000 this season hoping for 24 maunds of yield," said farmer Jalal Uddin of Sarikandi upazila.

"I have achieved some 23 maunds of yield and sold at Tk 36,000." he added.

The farmers have weaved the high yield seed, provided by the Bangladesh Agricultural Department Corporation (BADC), early on February to get good yield, said sub-assistance agriculture officer of DAE Azizur Rahman.

In a recent visit at Tekanichukainagar, Pakulla, Koromja and Korganj hat the correspondent found the farmers are coming in the area from the different remote village with jute in boat.

The wholesalers are purchasing each maund of Tosha jute variety at Tk 1500 to Tk 1600 from the peasants.

Meanwhile indigenous jute variety is being sold at Tk 1,400 to Tk 1,450 in the retail market while Tk 1,300 to Tk 1,350 in the wholesale market.

Deputy director of DAE Protul Chandra Sarker said good production encourage the growers to expand the farming.
