NAOGAON, June 08: Commercial farming of malta, a popular citrus fruit, is gaining popularity in Porsha upazila of the district for its high demand and good price in the market.

Sources from the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Porsha, said one Abdus Sabur of village Gabirakuri under the upzaila introduced the malta cultivation in the area.

Later, three more farmers of the upazila have cultivated BARI-1 verities of malta on separate demonstration plots with the assistant of the DAE office and many others are showing their interests in cultivation of the fruit.

Contacted, grower Abdus Sabur informed he plated some 420 malta saplings of different sizes on one acre of land.

"The plants are growing well in favourable atmosphere and I am expecting a good profit from the cultivation", he added.

Upazila agriculture officer Mahbubur Rahman stated the cultivation of malta could be more profitable for farmers, especially for small and marginal ones as it does not require fertile land and cultivation cost is comparatively less.

The land not suitable for traditional farming could be used for malta cultivation. From a full grown malta tree, farmers can pick 250 to 300 fruits, Mr Rahman added.
