Bogra farmers start harvesting early variety of bean

BOGRA, Oct 30: Hundreds ultra-poor bean cultivators of the district are making handsome profit this season.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Bogra office sources said, short duration early bean variety had been cultivated on around 250 hectares of land last year in twelve upazilas of the district. The farmer have taken over 300 hectares of land under the crop cultivation in this season, DAE added.

Farmers of the region have started harvesting early bean variety with enthusiasm from first week of October and making a good profit, said farmer Sumon Kumar, 45, at Damkuri village under Dupchanchia upazila. The farmers will bring new more land under the crops if they can make good profit, he added.

In a recent visit the correspondent found each kg of fresh bean variety is being sold from Tk 70 to 80 in the retail market while Tk 60 to 65 in the wholesale market. The farmers are to spend Tk 2000 to 2500 to produce five decimal of crops and can earn Tk from 20,000 to 23,000.

"I had taken around 13 decimal of land under early bean variety spending Tk 1000 last year and made over Tk 14000," said farmer Tahmid Haque Iram, 23, at Badaher village under Kahaloo upazila. He also said, "I have cultivated some 30 decimal of the crops in this season taking quality seed from Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) in this season to make Tk 34000."

Customer Rezaul Karim, 45, under Sherpur upazila said, he purchases one kg of fresh bean from local kitchen market with Tk 80. The price of the crops is beyond the capacity of purchasing the low and middle income generation, he added.
