Manikganj char farmers eyeing bumper groundnut yield

The char farmers of Daulatpur, Shibalaya and Harirampur upazilas of Manikganj district are happy getting bumper output of groundnut as harvesting of the crop continues on the char lands during the current Kharip-1 season.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) officials here said a total of 2,494 hectares of land was cultivated groundnut during this season in the district, up from its fixed target 2007 hectares of land.

The char farmers are getting price of the crop between Tk 2000 and 2400 per mound on its quality, they said.

Farmers Rifazuddin of char Kalikapur of Baghutia union said he had cultivated groundnut on two bighas of land and now was getting expected production as there was adequate rainfall during the summer season.

Shamsher Ali, another farmer of Bachamara said he had already completed harvesting of groundnut on forty decimal of land, adding that groundnut is being sold Tk 2300 per mound in the market, reports BSS.

Baghutia Union Parishad member Mizanur Rahman Tota said groundnut cultivation is gaining popularity in the char areas as it grows in the sandy barren land and it needs no irrigation. Now groundnut became one of the cash crops for char people and it is cultivated twice around the year, he added.

Md Habibur Rahman Chowdhury, Deputy Director at Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said, the sandy land of char area is suitable for groundnut cultivation and its cultivation is gaining popularity in three upazilas of the district.
