Satkhira schoolgirl commits suicide to get rid of stalking

A schoolgirl reportedly took her own life in Baganbari area of Satkhira municipality after being unable to bear persistent stalking by a local young man.

The deceased was identified as Chandni Khatun, 16, a Class-X student and daughter of Abdul Gaffar and Tafura Khatun of the area.

The victim used to live with her mother after the couple got separated a few years back.

Gaffar said Mehedi Hasan, 22, son of Shafiqul Islam, used to harass Chandni on her way to and from school.

Unable to endure frequent harassment, the girl hanged herself from the ceiling of her room around 9am on Monday, he said. "I want justice for my daughter."

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of the district Mostafa Kamal said the victim came to his office on Sunday evening and sought justice when he ordered instant action again Mehed, reports UNB.

Superintendent of Police of the district Sazzadur Rahman said police arrested the youth on Monday morning.
