Widespread consumer demand makes cabbage peasants happy in Bogura

BOGURA, Jan 30: Widespread demand of hundreds of consumer's has made cabbage growers in Bogura district happy.

During the time last year, they suffered due to low market price but this year they are getting both fair market price and satisfactory output. Favorable weather condition has boosted cabbage farming.

According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office source, farmers of twelve upazilas grow the vegetable variety every season to fill up family's need but the peasants of Shibganj, Gabtoli, Shajhanpur, Sarikandi, Sonatola and sadar upazilas grow the crops in commercial basis.

DAE said they send the crops item across the country after meeting local demand as they grow the vegetable abundantly.

During a recent visit at Pushindara village under Adamdighi upazila the correspondent found the farmers taking care of their crop land.

Cabbage peasants of the district are being encouraged to produce short duration winter vegetable in a large scale, said sub-assistance agriculture officer Faridur Rahman.

The farmers are selling each fresh cabbage at Tk 15 to 20 according to size and weight in the retail market while Tk 10 to 12 in the wholesale markets against Tk 5 to 8 production cost.

"I have cultivated cabbage on 20 decimals of land spending Tk 4,500 to pay fertiliser, pesticide, and labour cost," said farmer Arup Kumar under Gabtoli upazila.

"I have already sold the produce at Tk 25,000 and expecting to sell at Tk 12,000 if the market price remains good." he added.

DAE official said we have provided both logistic and fertiliser support among the farmers this season. The farmers of the area have shown more interest on cabbage farming, he added.
