A suspected drug peddler has been killed in a 'gunfight' that erupted between his associates and members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Dharmapur village in Feni Sadar upazila early Monday.

Deceased Anwar Hossain Raju, 25, was accused in 10 cases, including rape, drug, arms and robbery, filed with Feni Model Police Station.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of RAB-7 led by Squadron Leader Safayat Jamil conducted a drive on the area to thwart drug smuggling around 4:30 am, says a UNB report.

Sensing presence of RAB, the smugglers opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to retaliate, triggering a gunfight that left Raju wounded.

The injured was taken to Feni Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Two foreign-made pistols, two one-shutter guns, one pistol, seven rounds of bullets and five shells of cartridges were recovered from the spot later.
