Criminal dies in Jashore ‘gunfight’ hours after arrest

A man has been killed in an alleged shootout with police in Jashore.

The shootout occurred in Jhikargachha upazila’s Kayamkulam Baghmara in Jashore early Saturday, said Fakir Azizur Rahman, local police inspector.

The man has been identified as Jahid Hassan Tokon, a resident of Krishnanagar village. He was accused in 27 cases, including charges of murder and possession of drugs and weapons, according to the police.

Tokon was detained from Jashore town around 12 am on Saturday and had confessed to owning a stock of weapons, police said. Police then took him along on a raid in Baghmara to recover the weapons, said Inspector Azizur., reports bdnews24.

“Arriving the spot, Tokon’s accomplices opened fire on police, triggering a gun battle with the law enforcers. Tokon was shot in the head during the gunfight and was rushed to Jashore General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.”

A shotgun, ammunition and five crude bombs were recovered from the scene, the inspector said.
