Customs officials have detained a Malaysian national with seven kilograms of gold at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

The detainee, 47-year-old Chan Gee Keong, arrived in Dhaka aboard a Malindo Air flight from Malaysia at 10:00pm on Sunday.

Dhaka Customs House Deputy Commissioner Othello Chowdhury said they had received a tip about the gold beforehand and searched Chan Gee Keong after he passed the green channel.

“A jacket was found under his undershirt. Seven gold bars were wrapped in carbon paper and covered in yellow tape inside the jacket.”

According to Othello Chowdhury, each bar weighed one kilogram. The total market value of the stash is approximately Tk 35 million (Tk 3.5 crore), reports bdnews24.

Chan Gee Keong is currently in the custody of the airport police station. A case will be filed against him under the Customs Act and Special Powers Act.
