Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon formally inaugurated a programme to identify and destroy breeding grounds of Aedese mosquito in all the 57 wards under the DSCC on Monday.

The programme was launched at 57 Wards simultaneously in a view to free the Dhaka South city from Chikungunya and Dengue diseases in this monsoon.

The DSCC Mayor started the programme by removing the accumulated water from under construction establishments and houses at Dhanmondi Satmasjid Road area. The programme will be continued for next 15 days, reports UNB.

Under this programme, breeding grounds of Aedese mosquitoes will be identified and destroyed in at least 100 households in each of the 57 wards on experimental basis. It will also be taught how to destroy the reproductive system of mosquito breeding.

Talking to reporters, the DSCC Mayor said that this year the programme has been implemented using the experience gathered in last year to keep the city dwellers free from Chikungunya and Dengue diseases.

He said the next action will be taken on the basis of this home-to-home experiment.

Sayeed Khokon hoped that the ongoing programme would bring success if the city dwellers and elite of the society get themselves involved with it. He also sought cooperation from the mass media to create mass awareness for removing water that might be stored in A/C, refrigerators and flower vases and water bottles as Aedese mosquitoes are born in clean water.

DSCC Chief Executive Officer Khan Mohammad Bilal, Chief Health Officer Brig Gen Sheikh Salahuddin, Chief Waste Management Officer Air Commodore M Zahid Hossain and other officials were present.
