JHENIDAH, Nov 24: Farmers of Jhenidah are now busy harvesting Transplanted Aman (T-Aman) paddy they are happy over the yield.

According the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, around 64 per cent of the paddy has already been harvested here.  The total production target of T-Aman paddy was 0.28 million tonnes, sources added.

DAE targeted to bring 0.99535 hectares of land under T-Aman cultivation in six upazilas of the district.

The production targets of Hybrid and Ufsi were 8780 tonnes (MT) and 0.27 MT respectively.

However, the target exceeded and a total of    0.10 million hectares of land was brought under cultivation.

A farmer Sumon Ali of Kuthi Durgapur village under Jhenidah Sadar upazila said, they are getting good yield of the paddy this year. They got timely necessary support and advice from DAE officials including field level officers.

Sumon added that he got from 25 to 26 maunds of paddy per bigha (33 decimals) of land.

Another farmer Tulu Mia of Shitly village under Harinakundu upazila said they were harvesting paddy with good yield as well. He cultivated paddy on 1.22 acres of land and he harvested 38 maunds of the crop cutting paddy from 1.5 bighas, Tulu added.

Upazila Agriculture Officer (UAO), Jhenidah Sadar Md Mofaqkharul Islam said, farmers were getting good yields as they followed the DAE officers advice.

Because of farming using balanced fertiliser, life parching, continuation of supplementary irrigation and above all favourable weather condition, farmers were getting bumper T-Aman production this season, Mofaqkharul added.

In October when the plants were at heading and flowering stage, because of very hot weather, paddy fields needed more water than usual, the farmers continued supplementary irrigation as per the advice of the sub-assistant agriculture officers (SAAOs), he also added.

GM, Abdur Rouf, Deputy Director (DD), DAE, Jhenidah said T-Aman target exceeded this year. Farmers did not get good yield of mustard and lentil last year. Later they cultivated Aus on those lands and got good yield. So, they cultivated T-Aman on more land this year.

As to the low price of the paddy, this officer advised the farmers to enter different websites to enquire about prices and sell their crops to those who offered higher prices. Thus, the farmers got rid of the ups and downs of the crop prices of the local markets.
