Growers of early radish expecting a good yield in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Oct 17: The early radish growers of Rangpur district are expecting an excellent yield of the vegetable during the current season due to congenial weather and timely supply of agri-inputs.

According to sources early radish is being cultivated in plenty at different areas including Ranipukur, Boiriganj of Mithapukur upazila, Palichara, Kukrul under Rangpur sadar, Nabdiganj, Deuti of Pirgachha upazila, Alampur, Ikorchali, Dangapara of Taraganj upazila and Madrain, Talukhabu, Changmari of Gangachara upazila in the district.

Due to good profit its farming is on the rise across the region as the peasants are showing more interest in farming the vegetable in recent years, sources said.

Akmal, an early radish grower of Jummakhanpara village in Mithapukur upazila said he cultivated early radish on one bigha of land this season. Last season he got a good yield and earned satisfactory profit from early farming of radish which encouraged him to grow the crop on a large scale this season, he also said.

Witnessing his success many farmers of his area and its adjacent areas have also cultivated it on their lands this season, he added.

Tota Mia, a farmer of Madrain village under Gangachara upazila told The Financial Express that it takes only 40 days from sowing seed to harvest radish. He cultivated early radish on about 30 decimals of land during the current season and is optimistic about achieving a good yield and price of the vegetable. He said in recent times farmers are getting good profit from different varieties of vegetables including radish which encourage the growers to expand vegetables farming across the region, he added.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur , sources said owing good profit the farmers of the region are getting interested to cultivate early verities of vegetables including early radish in recent years. The department has taken various steps including timely supply of necessary agri-inputs to increase production of early varieties of vegetables in the region, sources added.
