'Japan should lift travel alert'

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed has urged the Japanese government to withdraw the alert imposed on its citizens travelling to Bangladesh.

“No logical ground is prevailing now, so Bangladesh would be happy if Japan takes quick measure regarding the issue,” the minister said.

Tofail made call during a bilateral meeting with Japanese Parliamentary Vice Minister on Foreign Affairs Iwao Horii at a hotel in Tokyo, said a ministry release on Monday.

Referring to the long standing bilateral trade and economic relations between the two countries, Tofail hoped the relations would be strengthened further in the days ahead.

He told the Japanese minister that Bangladesh government is offering special facilities to the foreign investors and they could bring back the investment with profit any time.

“Bangladesh protects the interest of foreign investors by the law,” Tofail said, reports BSS.

The commerce minister also urged the Japanese vice minister to take initiatives for its citizens to invest in Bangladesh.

Tofail Ahmed also proposed that the fourth meeting of public-private economic dialogue be held in Dhaka.

Japan imposed travel alert for its nationals following the killing of Japanese citizens in an attack on the Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan.

Expressing his country’s happiness over the ongoing development and economic progress of Bangladesh, Iwao Horri gave assurances of continued Japanese cooperation on infrastructural and trade development as well as increased investment.

The Japanese vice minister also thanked Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for providing shelter to Rohingya people, and said Japan government would pursue Mayanmar to bring take the Rohingya people.

“Japan would also continue its endeavor in favor of conducting proper international investigation on Rohingya issue,” the vice minister said.

The Bangladesh Ambassador to Japan, FBCCI President Shafiul Islam Mahiuddin, BGMEA President M Siddiqur Rahman, additional secretary M Obaidul Azam and other members of the business delegation were present.
