BNP chief Khaleda Zia may return to the country as early as this week, according to senior leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, reports bdnews24.com.

“She is coming back very soon. I am hoping that she is returning this week," he said on Saturday while responding to queries from the media.

The BNP secretary general, however, could not give a specific date.

Khaleda has been in London since Jul 15 for medical treatment. She is staying at her elder son Tarique Rahman's home.

BNP senior vice chairman Tarique has been living in the UK since 2008.

Khaleda has always met him in London after he had moved from Dhaka, where he faces trials in a number of cases and has been convicted of money laundering.

Early last month, senior BNP leader Alamgir said that the party chief will return to the country in the second week of September.

But later, BNP's UK chapter MA Malek said that her return has been delayed as she was taking treatment for her leg following her eye surgery.

Ruling Awami League leaders, however, claim that Khaleda is staying in London to conspe against the Hasina administration.

Last week courts in Dhaka and Comilla issued arrest warrants against Khaleda in three cases over corruption and arson attack.

The BNP described the court orders as a ploy by the government to stop her from coming back.
