Meherpur gunfight leaves ‘terrorist’ dead

An alleged terrorist was killed in a gunfight with police at Nurpur village in sadar upazila of Meherpur district on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Firatul Islam, 48, son of Ayub Ali, resident of Pirojpur village of the upazila. He was accused in 10 cases with Meherpur Sadar and Mujibnagar police stations, reports UNB.

Ahsan Habib, assistant superintendent of sadar (circle) police, said that on secret information a team of police conducted drive at a jackfruit orchard at the village around 2:00am while Firatul along with his aides was taking preparation to commit robbery there.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the gang members opened fire at them, prompting police to retaliate that triggered a gunfight.

At one stage, Firatul was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while others managed to flee the scene.

Police also recovered one LG shooter gun, five round bullets, five crude bombs and three machetes from the spot, Ahsan Habib added
