LGRD Minister Md Tajul Islam on Sunday emphasised on improving the standard of service in the local government to inspire citizens in paying taxes.

The Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) minister urged the municipal mayors to provide better services to people in this effect.

The minister said it as chief guest at a view-exchange meeting with municipal mayors at the city’s Department of Public Health Engineering auditorium.

Citing example of developed countries, the minister said that local government bodies are independent in the developed countries.

“They run local government agencies with their own fund provided by citizen’s taxes,” he commented.

But, Bangladesh was still lagging behind in that concern, he said and called upon the local government officials to inspire people to pay taxes.

Secretary to the Ministry Helal Uddin Ahmed presided over the event while officials of the ministry, Municipal Association of Bangladesh President Dewan Kamal Ahmed and Secretary General Md Rafiqul Islam and some 327 municipal mayors were present at the programme.

In the meeting, the local government representatives highlighted their demands to address limitations they have been facing in discharging their duties in local government offices.
