A court in Sherpur on Wednesday sentenced a Neo JMB member to 21 years imprisonment in an explosives case.

The convict is Abul Kashem alias Abu Mosab, 22.

Senior district and sessions judge of the Special Tribunal-1 court MA Noor pronounced the verdict amid tight security at the court premises.

Acting public prosecutor for the tribunal advocate Arun Kumar Singha Roy said that under sections 4 and 5 of the law Kashem was sentenced to 14 and 7 years jail respectively, which will run parallel.

The court also fined him Tk 10,000, in default, to suffer six months more rigorous imprisonment.

The acting PP said that some Neo-JMB members were planning to attack the Hindu community during last year's Durga Puja festival and explosives were stored in a rented warehouse in Nakla upazila's Chandrakona Bazar.

Police seized a godown of explosives on October 5, 2017 and a case was filed against Kashem and two others.

Nakla thana police arrested Kashem on October 22 from Tangail, reports UNB.

The charge-sheet against him was submitted by the investigating officer and Chandrakona police investigation centre in-charge Aminur Rahman on December 28, 2017. Charges were framed against him on March 8 this year.
