A total of 29 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members have been deployed in Gazipur ahead of the city corporation elections scheduled for Tuesday.

The border guards were deployed at different parts of the city on Sunday morning to avert any untoward incident, said Mohsin Reza, public relations officer of the BGB.

The platoons will remain on duty till June 27, he added.

The elections will be held on Tuesday and the candidates can continue their campaign till midnight on Sunday.

Some 1.1 million voters are expected to cast their votes in the upcoming polls to elect one mayor, 57 general ward councillors and 19 reserve women councillors.

Seven aspirants - Jahangir Alam of Awami League, Hasan Uddin Sarker of BNP, Md Ruhul Amin of Communist Party of Bangladesh, Md Jalal Uddin of Bangladesh Islami Front, Fazlul Haque Minar of Islami Oikkya Jote, Md Nasir Uddin of Islami Andolan Bangladesh and independent candidate Farid Ahmed - are contesting for the mayoral post.

Earlier, the polls were scheduled to be held on May 15, but the High Court had stayed it, UNB reports.

Later, the Appellate Division reviewed the High Court order and asked the Election Commission to hold the elections within June 28.
