Burkina Faso has obtained a loan of 33 million US dollars to fund presidential and emergency programmes on the Sahel region, the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Development said.

It said the financing agreement between the West African country and the French Development Agency (AFD) was signed on Thursday by Minister of Economy, Finance and Development Lassane Kabore and the AFD Director for Burkina Faso Tanguy Denieul in the capital Ouagadougou, reports Xinhua.

According to the ministry, the funding is intended to be part of government budget support as repeated terrorist attacks by extremists in the Sahel region have prompted a huge financial need.

Data showed that there have been some 500 people killed and 280,000 internally displaced, including more than 9,500 pupils, in terrorist attacks since 2015 in Burkina Faso.
