The Editors' Council on Monday demanded that the Digital Security Act 2018 be amended during the next session of this parliament which is likely to be held on October 21, 2018.

General secretary of the council and editor of The Daily Star Mahfuz Anam made the demand at a human chain programme in front of the Jatiya Press Club (JPC).

Specifically, the platform of editors of national dailies demanded amendment to sections 8, 21,25, 28, 29, 31, 32, 43 and 53 of the law, saying that those are harmful to the cause of independent journalism and freedom of expression.

Speaking at the event, Mr Mahfuz Anam also appreciated the promise of the information minister for continuation of the talks regarding amendment of the nine sections of the act, which the council members said go against the rights to freedom of speech and freedom of press as guaranteed under articles 39 (a) and (b) of the Constitution.

“We appreciate the promise of the information minister for continuation of talks for amendment. We want to engage in talks. Don’t make a mockery of it,” he said.

Editors of most of the national dailies were present in the human chain programme.
