Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu has said the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) in Savar tannery estate has not been fully functional till date mainly due to fault by Chinese contractors.

"We are yet to get full benefits from the ETP, which got troubled due to Chinese contractor's fault," said the minister.

He also said nearly 80 per cent of the industrial waste treatment facility is now functional.

He, however, expressed the hope that the ETP will be fully functional within a short period of time.

The Minister said this while addressing the 40th founding anniversary of Bangladesh Indenting Agents' Association (BIAA) at a city hotel on Monday evening.

Railways Minister Mujibul Haque, Prime Minister's Adviser to private sector development Salman F Rahman and president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Md Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin also spoke on the occasion, among others.

The BIAA president Muhammad Ayub moderated the function.

In his speech, the industries minister also said the government has successfully relocated the tannery estate from Hazaribagh to Savar amid many complexities.

"Now we are almost successful to help check the environment pollution created from leather processing," he said.

Mentioning Bangladesh's success during the two consecutive tenure of the incumbent government, he said the country is now an economic role model to many other countries.

He said the government achievement in triumph over the marine boundary against two neighboring countries has brought huge economic opportunities.

"Even the marine resources can outnumber the resources in land area," he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Railways Minister Mujibul Haque congratulated the country's indenting agents for their contribution to the national economy.

The FBCCI president Shafiul Islam said the country's economy need to grow around three times to US $900 billion within 2030 from the existing $280 billion to achieve the development goals.

"Private sector must play the leading role to this aim," he said.

He also underscored the need for framing congenial policy and its uninterrupted continuation.

Five members of the BIAA were awarded for their outstanding contributions in indenting services in the last two fiscal years.

They are Shahab Uddin Khan, Esharot Hossain, Mohammad Kamal Uddin, Deepok Kumar Baral and Abdul Momen.

They received the crests from the chief guest along with other guests.
