Most of the 3,846 readymade garment (RMG) factories -- located in Ashulia, Gazipur, Narayanganj, Chattogram, Mymensingh and Khulna areas that are under the purview of the Industrial Police (IP) -- paid monthly wages for July and festival allowance till Thursday, according to IP data.

Garment and other industrial units within the Dhaka metropolitan area are out of the purview of the Industrial Police.

About 70.3 per cent or 2,704 garment factories paid monthly wage, and about 79.61 per cent or 3,062 factories paid the festival allowance, according to IP data.

Some 1,142 garment factories or 29.70 per cent out of the 3,846 units are yet to pay the monthly wage for July.

Some 784 or 20.39 per cent factories failed to pay festival allowance till filling the report at 8.30 pm on Thursday.

But the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) claimed almost all -- 98 per cent of its member factories paid the festival allowance till Thursday.

Five out of 130 factories listed by the law enforcing agencies as 'vulnerable' to labour unrest also paid festival allowance, BGMEA President Dr Rubana Huq said.

She expressed hope that the remaining factories, if any, would be paid by Saturday (August 10).

The government, however, did not fix any timeframe for the payment of wage for the month of July and festival allowance.

A total of 24.43 million workers are employed in the 3,846 garment units except those of Dhaka metropolitan area, it showed.

Besides, there are some 3,639 factories which are non-member RMG units of BGMEA, or belong to Bangladesh Knitwear Manufactures and Exporters Association, Bangladesh Textile Mills Association or fall in other sectors including plastic, re-rolling listed with the Industrial Police.

Out of these 3,639 factories, some 70.2 per cent paid monthly wage, while 73.2 per cent of the factories paid festival allowance until Thursday.

Some 1.90 million workers are employed in these units.

Industry leaders and law enforcing agencies expressed the hope that the rest of the factories would pay wage and other payment by Saturday.
