Two more dengue patients die in Dhaka, Barishal

Two more people have died of mosquito-borne disease dengue in Dhaka and Barishal on Thursday.

The deceased were identified as Gias Uddin, 40, son of Abdul Awal of Chandpur; and Monir Hossain, 38, son of Shahjahan Mia of Mehendiganj upazila under Barishal.

Bachchu Mia, inspector of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police outpost, said Gias, a resident of Postogola, got admitted to the hospital with high fever at around 11:00pm on Wednesday.

“He was later shifted to the Intensive Care Unit where he died around 6:20am,” Bachchu said.

The body was handed over to the family members.

Gias, a father of three, was a businessman, said Jahangir, his elder brother.

In Barishal, Monir Hossain died of dengue at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) in the morning.

SBMCH Director Dr Bakir Hossain said Monir was hospitalised after being diagnosed with dengue on August 18. He died at around 5:00am.

At least 1,626 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals in 24 hours till 8:00am on Wednesday. Of the new cases, 711 were recorded in Dhaka.

Currently, 6,278 dengue patients are undergoing treatment at different hospitals and clinics, according to the Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services. 

Since the beginning of this year, 57,995 patients infected with dengue were hospitalised and 51,670 of them were discharged after treatment.

The government has so far confirmed the deaths of 47 people but unofficial estimates suggest the death toll is much higher.
