Zayan laid to rest at Banani graveyard

Awami League Presidium Member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim’s grandson Zayan Chowdhury, who was killed in the Sri Lanka series blasts on Easter Sunday, was laid to rest at Banani graveyard in the capital on Wednesday afternoon.

After his namaz-e-janaza at Banani Chairmanbari ground after Asr prayers, Zayan was buried at Banani graveyard at about 5.40 pm, reports BSS.

Before the burial of Zayan, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim gave a brief speech.

Salim said the body of his grandson was severely affected in the blasts. He urged people to pray for the departed soul of his grandson and early recovery of his son-in-law Moshiul Haque Chowdhary who also suffered splinter injuries in kidney and liver in the deadly terror attack.

AL leader Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed and Mohammed Nasim, AL acting general secretary Mahbub-Ul-Alam Hanif, its joint general secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Md Atiqul Islam, Mahfuzur Rahman Mita, MP, Elias Hossain Mollah, MP, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammad Javed Patwary, Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Md Asaduzzaman Mia and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Director General Benazir Ahmed, among others, attended the namaz-e-janaza of Zayan.

Zayan was buried at Banani graveyard next to the graves of the martyrs who were killed on August 15 in 1975.

The qulkhawani of Zayan will be held at Banani Chairmanbari ground on Saturday next, according to family members.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited the residence of Sheikh Selim in the city’s Banani area to console the family members of Zayan.

Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and Deputy Leader of the Opposition Rowshan Ershad also visited the Sheikh Selim’s residence.

The body of Zayan reached at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 12:40 pm today and later, his body was taken to Banani residence.

Zayan’s grandfather Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim and Sheikh Helal Uddin received the body at the airport.

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen, Awami League Advisory Council Member Tofail Ahmed, AL acting General Secretary Mahbub-Ul-Alam Hanif, former Railways Minister M Mujibul Haque, DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam and RAB Director General Benazir Ahmed were present there.

Over 350 people were killed and several hundred others injured in the blasts.
