A special court on Monday handed a 10-year jail to Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, whose followers went on a deadly rampage after he was convicted of rape on Friday.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court today announced the maximum punishment of 10 years against Ram Rahim Singh, 50, for the rape of two women followers in 1992, according to global media reports.

The quantum of sentence was announced in the special court specially set up inside the district Jail premises in Sunaria near Rohtak, where the controversial ‘godman’ was brought and lodged after his conviction.

Thousands of soldiers are guarding the prison and the army is on standby to prevent any untoward incident across Haryana, Punjab and other affected areas.

No civilians are being allowed within 10 km of the prison. Over 0.10 million of Ram Rahim's followers had gathered in Panchkula, where he was convicted on Friday, and they erupted in violence that left 38 people dead and over 200 injured.
