It's about developing habit of writing

Even a few hours back I was caught in a dilemma to whether I should write something different or go with what I have been writing and publishing in this paper for the past three years. But something inside me instinctively said that I should take the liberty to write a piece of my mind instead of the usual things I have written so far.

So before I start, let me give you a quick back story: I started my undergraduate life in Bangladesh University of Professionals back in 2015. Like many others of my time, I was thrilled, excited and full of energy when I willingly chose to work for BUP's Business and Communication Club. For most freshmen, getting into that club was 'the highlight' of our first year. It was like a shiny toy, and every one of us wanted it badly even though we had zero ideas of what it required us to do and to be. Being recruited as freshmen then, and now, reaching in my final year I could go on and write how this club has taught me leadership qualities, communication skills and all the other textbook adjectives that very well fits with the scenario. But I won't!   Today I will instead talk about how I evolved as an individual in my tenure with this club.

I remember the very first task that I was given as a general member in my freshmen year by one of my senior club members back in 2015. I was to write a pre-event article for a competition named 'Corporiddlerz' for the Financial Express (FE), Bangladesh. Funnily enough, I denied writing the first time. I was scared and anxious for not having any experience in writing that too for a national print media. However, I wrote it, and the article was rejected twice by the seniors of the FE who scrutinised my writing. The rejections made me more anxious, and it was natural as I was representing my club BUP BCC in a mass media. I knew that I could not afford to write an average piece. I received constructive criticisms, a full-length instruction on phrasing formal articles and a mail full of motivation to re-write the article giving a 'third try' from this very newspaper's team. Hence, I re-wrote the article the third time, and now in 2018, I am writing my 15th article for them on behalf of BUP BCC.

Before joining  BUP Business and Communication Club  I did not even know that I could write because I always felt that I do not fit into the status quo of being a writing person. But what this club gave me was a platform through which I discovered something new about myself and had the opportunity to learn.

The virtual mentoring and the guidance that I have received from this newspaper team and my university club throughout my undergraduate life have made me discover a potential that I never knew I had and even gave me the honour to serve BCC as the editor-in-chief presently. The story is not unique to me. BUP BCC has made each of us something that we never knew we could be. Our university, faculty members, our seniors and all the other organisations that we as students had to reach out to through the platform of this club have taught us to be a leader in the form of club president, a strategist in the form of a competition designer, an accountant in the way of a treasurer and most importantly someone who we thrive to become tomorrow in our professional lives. So if you are someone who wants to join a club only to earn some extra-curricular (ECA) credits, please have an open mind in embracing challenges because being a member of a student club is more than just ECA. It is learning.
