55 gold bars seized in Dhaka, Jashore

At least fifty-five gold bars have been seized at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in Dhaka and in Sharsha upazila of Jashore district.

In Dhaka, a team of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) recovered 48 gold bars worth Tk 79.60 million from a garbage basket in the HSIA early Saturday.

Tipped off, a team of CIID recovered the gold bars weighing 15.738kg from nine packets wrapped with scotch tape near a washroom around 1:30am, said Director General CIID Dr. Shahidul Islam.

In Jashore, Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested two suspected gold smugglers along with seven gold bars at Koyra village in Sharsha upazila of the district on Friday night.

The arrestees are-Moniruzzaman, son of Abdul Hamid of Bagadanga village and Abul Khayer, son of Abdul Khaleq of Dorki village in Kolaroa upazila in Satkhira district, according to UND reports.

Imran Ullah Sarker, commanding officer of BGB-21 battalion, said that on information that a consignment of gold bar was being smuggled to India, a team of BGB conducted the drive and arrested the duo from Koyra border along with the gold bars worth Tk 0.69 million.

A case was filed in this connection.
