Additional electricity generation required to meet unanticipated needs: Power Division

Power Division under the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources (MPEMR) on Sunday said the country’s additional electricity generation capacity is ‘reserve margin,’ which is necessary to meet unanticipated needs.

Like many other countries in the world, the additional production of electricity is required as power plants regularly undergo maintenance and sometimes could shut down accidentally, it said in a statement.

Besides, power plants operate taking into consideration the fuel issues and the declining power generation capacity of older plants, it added.

Germany maintains over 100 per cent reserve margin whereas it is over 70 per cent in neighbouring India, the statement said.

The Power Division made the clarification protesting a Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) statement issued on May 20 that criticised constant generation of electricity surpassing demand and termed it a burden for consumers and pressure on government subsidy.

TIB also demanded cancellation of rental power system and update the Power System Master Plan (PSMP) 2016.

Protesting the TIB’s statement, Power Division termed it uncalled for and partial, adding  steps have been taken to update the PSMP 2016.

The division also said it continues to provide 20 per cent subsidy to farmers for irrigation and has no plan to cancel it.

The Power Division has been working to ensure maximum utlisation of renewable energy despite limited land and inadequate technology.
