Banana growers hopeful of getting plentiful yield in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Jan 12: The growers of banana in different areas of the district are hopeful of getting a plentiful yield of the fruit during this year.
According to the agriculturists, the soil of many areas of the region is suitable for its farming.
Ahidul Mia, a banana grower at Jaigirhat area of Mithapukur upazila told the FE that he has been successfully cultivating banana for the last few years and selling those at good prices.
Presently, he has 100 banana plants in his orchard which are full of fruits. He has already started harvesting his produce and so far earned Tk 12,000 from its sale, he added.
Amirul Hossain, another banana cultivator of Projapara village in Pirganj upazila said that he has 200 banana plants in his orchard. All the plants have been full of fruits this year. He has already begun harvesting those. He expressed satisfaction over the yield of the fruit, this season.
Witnessing his success, many people have engaged themselves in its cultivation, he said. A good number of people of the district have become able to change their financial condition through banana cultivation in recent years, he added.
A good number of banana orchards have so far been set up in the district. Per day large quantity of banana are sold at different markets across the region, sources said.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur official sources said owing to good yield as well as satisfactory profit the peasants are expanding farming of different varieties of fruits including banana on commercial basis across eight upazilas under the district every year.
The department is providing adequate assistances to the farmers for enhancing fruit farming in order to improve socio-economic and nutritional condition of the people in the region, sources added.
