BRAC Bank has hired five transgender and nine differently abled people as part of its workplace diversification and social inclusion drive. They will be assigned to various departments based on their skills.

BRAC Bank has taken this social effort based on the principle of self-awareness and self-discovery, the bank said in a statement on Sunday.

“Race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, and physical condition should not restrict the development of any person's talent,” remarked BRAC Bank Managing Director and CEO Selim Reza Farhad Hossain in response to the effort.

“In preparation for welcoming these new officials to the BRAC Bank family, bank employees have been asked to be sensitive. We think that by launching this campaign, we will raise awareness about the importance of including transgender people in society,” he added.

Since its foundation in 2001, BRAC Bank has grown focusing on the small and medium enterprises (SME). Currently, it serves consumers in the business and retail divisions, with 187 branches and a workforce of over 8,000 individuals.

Earlier this year, in consideration that the third gender community may foster into mainstream society and business, the government has also promised a 5.0 per cent corporate tax waiver if a company hires 100 members of Bangladesh's transgender community.
