The Brazilian government has expressed condolences to Bangladesh over the Chawkbazar fire which resulted in dozens of deaths and injuries.

The Brazilian government took note with deep regret of the fire which killed 67 people in the historic district on Wednesday night, according to the Brazilian Foreign Ministry Statement.

The ministry said the Brazilian government conveyed its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, wished the wounded a speedy and complete recovery, and expressed its solidarity with Bangladesh and its people, reports Xinhua.

The fire, which claimed dozens of deaths and injuries, reportedly started when a gas cylinder in a car exploded.

The fire spread to a nearby restaurant with cylinders and a shop where chemicals were stored illegally, causing a wider fire in a residential neighbourhood.
