No truck passage in ferries for 6 days over Eid

All trucks and covered vans will be restricted from boarding ferries across the country for three days either side of Eid-ul-Fitr, making an exception for essential products.

 

State Minister of Shipping Ministry Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury disclosed this Tuesday, reports UNB.

 

Additionally, he mentioned that the ministry has decided to ban using fishing nets in the shipping routes to ensure normal passage for the ships.

 

He made the announcement in a meeting on action plans for safe and secure traveling of the public on the coming occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr arranged by the Shipping Ministry at Bangladesh Inland Waterway Transport Authority (BIWTA) Bhaban in the capital.

 

The state minister also urged every stakeholder related to the local waterways and shipping industry to do their part ensuring safe passage for the holidaymakers in the coming vacation of Eid-ul-Fitr.

 

"The water transport system is much safer than it was in the past. Government has set the goal of 10000 kilometers for dredging. For this purpose, 400-500 dredgers are required. Over the past 10 years around 200 dredgers have been added to the government's disposal," he said.

 

To ensure periodical vacation in the RMG sector the ministry has contacted BGMEA and BKMEA, said the state minister.

 

"Even a single accident can ruin the happiness of the whole country," he said mentioning about the safety of the passengers.

 

State Minister in his speech as the chief guest, claimed that the journey of the holidaymakers on major vacation have been less troublesome in the past few years.

 

"We will be taking necessary measures to ensure a safe passage for the citizens who'll be visiting their homes this vacation," he added.

 

Among others present at the event Golam Kibria Tipu MP, Additional Secretary of Shipping Ministry Md Shahadat Hossain, BIWTC Chairman Pronoy Kanti Biswas, and Water Transport Department Director-General Commodore Syed Ariful Islam, alongside others, spoke.
