A young man allegedly committed suicide by swallowing poison after locals beat him on suspicion of theft at Paschim Budhpara in Rajshahi city early Friday.

The deceased was identified as Rashel Hossain, 24, son of Abdur Rashid of the same area.

Family and local sources said Rashel was nabbed by the family members of neighbouring Abul Kalam as Rashel after entering their house without taking their permission around 11:00pm on Friday.

Later, locals gave Rashela good beating on charges of theft attempt and handed him over to his family members.

Later in the night, Rashel took poison being shocked over the incident, they said.

Rashel was taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH), but the on-duty doctors declared him dead around 2:00am.

However, Rashel's father-in-law Alamgir Hossain alleged that he was forcefully swallowed poison during the mass-beating that left him dead.

Confirming the incident, officer-in-charge of Matihar Police Station Shahadat Hossain said the body was sent to the hospital's morgue for an autopsy, reports UNB.
