Eggs on the cheap drew too many people at the egg fair in capital Dhaka's Khamarbarhi, resulting in the chaos and then its immediate cancellation on Thursday.

The Department of Livestock Services and the Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council organised the fair with a view to promoting the goodness of eggs among people.

The fair aimed at selling 20,000 eggs at a special discount of Taka 3.0 per piece between 10am to 1pm, also putting cap on its sale individually—a person can buy not more than 90 eggs.

Just 20 minutes into the fair, all the egg supplies ran out and most of the people who did not get eggs smashed makeshift shops there.

The agitated people also shouted slogans like ‘fake, fake’, and egg robber, egg robber’ and later police rushed in to control the angry mob.

Officials said they had not imagined that the fair would get such a huge response and would take this experience in view while organising the fair next year.

The World Egg Day is being observed in more than 40 countries with a view to helping inspire, educate and inform people about the nutrition qualities of eggs.
