JOYPURHAT, Jan 03: A good number of potters in the district have attained financial solvency in recent days.

They make pots of different shapes and sizes according to the market demand.

Akkelpur, Kalai and Sadar upazilas of the district are well-known across the country for pottery.

Some 3,000 people of the three upazilas are involved in the profession for their living.

Sources said the potters bring soil from nearby Tulshi Ganga riverbank and make quality pots according to the demand of the buyers.

Shyamal Kumar of Akkelpur upazila said he makes 50 big jars daily spending around Tk 1,000.

The potter said he earns around Tk 2,000 to Tk 3,000 every week from the sale of his items to the wholesalers.

During a recent visit to different villages this correspondent found that artisans, both male and female, were making pots at their homesteads.

Some potters said earthen pots are in great demand this period. Date juice extractors use the pots in the winter.

Wholesalers also send the pots to other districts due to high demand.

District potter's association president Sukanto Kumar said they do the job round the year.

He urged the government to arrange easy loan facility for the poor potters so that they can continue their  profession smoothly.
