BOGURA, May 06: Jute growers in the district are eyeing an abundant yield this season amid the prevailing weather.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) officials said over 1,200 tonnes of the golden fibre is expected from 2,500 hectares of land this season.

High-yielding Tosha is the most popular jute variety among the farmers in Dupchanchia, Adamdighi, Gabtoly, Sariakandi, Sherpur, Sonatola, Shibganj, Kahaloo, Nandigram, Shajahanpur, Dhunot and Sadar upazilas.

DAE sources said jute grows well in the district. The farming is expanding across the area for repeated good yield. The department provides all necessary support in this connection.

Sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE Faridur Rahman said growers should expand the farming of the crop for more profit.

Commercial cultivation of the item can help farmers attain self-reliance, the official added.

"I am farming Tosha jute on 32 decimals of land spending Tk 6,800," said farmer Nuralam Islam of Sonatola upazila.

He said, "I am expecting to grow over 34 maunds of yield."

A high official of DEA said around Tk 7,000 to Tk 9,000 is required to grow jute on a bigha of land and profit amounting to about Tk 22,000 can be made from the land.
