Khagrachhari clash leaves six dead

At least six people have been killed in a shootout reportedly between two sides of the UPDF Prasit group and the UPDF (Democratic) in the district town of Khagrachhari.

The incident began in the Shonirbhor Bazar area at around 8:30am, said Deputy Commissioner Shahidul Islam.

The victims have yet to be identified, reports bdnews24.

Nine people were brought to Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital, five of them were dead and four of them were injured, said Dr (RMO) Nayanmoy Tripura. One of the injured later died from their injuries.

The other three are in critical condition and have been sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for treatment, said Dr Tripura.

Police, DDR and Army personnel are working to bring the situation under control at the scene, but the shooting is ongoing.

“We are trying to bring the situation under control,” said Police Superintendent Ali Ahmed Khan. “More details will be available later on.”

According to the deputy commissioner, an initial report states that a shootout occurred between members of the UPDF Prasit group and the UPDF (Democratic).

UPDF-allied Pahari Chhatra Parishad member Amal Bikash Tripura said, “We are in a troubling situation and cannot leave the house.”
