'Myanmar has to decide on safe zone for Rohingyas'

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said a safe zone inside Myanmar for the Rohingyas has to be decided by the Myanmar government.

Otherwise, the security council's intervention will be required, which he describes as a "complex exercise".

The UNHCR agreed with Bangladesh's proposals to resolve the Rohingya crisis, but it is doubtful on a safe zone inside Myanmar for the Rohingyas, he said.

“We want safety in general in Rakhine State. Without that, the people will not be able to go back. People have lost everything. If there is no such guarantee of safety, they will not go back,” he told the media in Dhaka.

Grandi thanked Bangladesh for keeping its border open during the crisis and called the international community to step up support for the Rohingyas.

The UN has appealed for massive help for over the 430,000 Rohingyas who have fled to Bangladesh from a Myanmar military offensive in the western state that began after insurgents attacked police camps and an army base on Aug 25, killing about a dozen people.
