Nation celebrating 49th Independence Day

The nation is celebrating the 49th Independence and National Day today, refreshing the resolution to uphold the spirit of the War of Liberation and build a ‘Sonar Bangla’ as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina led the nation to pay rich tributes to the martyrs of the War of Liberation by placing wreaths at the National Memorial in Dhaka's Savar this morning marking the day, bdnews24.com and BSS report.

After placing the wreaths, the President and the Prime Minister stood in solemn silence for some time as a mark of profound respect to the memories of the martyrs of the Great War of Liberation in 1971.

A smartly turned-out contingent drawn from Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force presented a state salute on the occasion while the bugles played the last post.

Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, members of the cabinet, PM’s advisers, parliament members, freedom fighters, foreign diplomats, and high civil and military officials were present.

Later, flanked by senior leaders of the party, Sheikh Hasina, also the president of Bangladesh Awami League, laid another wreath at the National Memorial on behalf of her party.

Besides, Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Deputy Speaker Advocate Fazle Rabbi Mia, and Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain paid homage to the war heroes of 1971 by placing wreaths at the National Memorial at Savar.

Wreaths were also placed by Jatiya Party’s Co-Chairperson Begum Rawshan Ershad and Secretary General Mashiur Rahman Ranga.

Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation Sayeed Khokan and Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation Atiqul Islam also paid homage to the martyrs by placing wreaths separately.

The nation is also paying glowing tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, marking the day.

On her return from the National Memorial at Savar, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid the homage to him by placing a wreath at his portrait in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi in the capital.

Flanked by central leaders of the party, Sheikh Hasina, also the president of Bangladesh Awami League, laid another wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu on behalf of her party.

Later, the Prime Minister made her way to a rally for children and youth at the Bangbandhu National Stadium.

After Sheikh Hasina arrived, the national anthem was sung simultaneously across the country.

A children and youth rally had been held from Mar 10 to Mar 18 at Bangabandhu Stadium. The winners of the national anthem singing contest at the event will be presented with awards.

Sheikh Hasina, the head of the government, then observed the Independence Day Parade.

The day’s programme have begun with a 31-gun salute early in the morning.
