India opens two border crossing points with Myanmar, Bangladesh

India has opened two immigration check posts along the borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, official notifications said.

 

 

News agency PTI reported that separate gazette notifications issued by the home ministry has named the Zorinpui land check post in Lawngtlai district and the Kawrpuichhuah land check post in Lunglei district as authorised immigration check post for entry into or exit from India with valid travel documents for all classes of passengers to or from Myanmar and Bangladesh respectively.

 

 

Situated 287-km away from Myanmar’s Sittwe Port, Zorinpui has been selected to act as a land custom station for the Kaladan multi-modal project, according t reports published in www.thehindu.com and www.apnlive.com/

 

 

 

The opening of the custom station in Zorinpui had been proposed in May 2012 under a bilateral agreement between the then Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and the then Myanmar President, Thein Sein

 

 

Earlier this month, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visited Myanmar for his first two-day-long bilateral visit to the country.

 

 

Zorinpui was selected for a new land custom station along the Indo-Myanmar border in Mizoram for the Kaladan multi-modal project. The remote Zorinpui is 287 km away from Sittwe Port in Myanmar.

 

 

An agreement on Zorinpui was included in the joint statement issued during the visit of the then Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh to Myanmar in May, 2012.

 

Kawarpuchiah is situated in Mizoram along a riverine border with Bangladesh.

India shares a 4,096-km-long border with Bangladesh which touches Assam, Tripura, Mizoram, Meghalaya and West Bengal.
