Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has returned to Dhaka after attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where she addressed world leaders on the Rohingya crisis.

The prime minister’s flight touched down at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 9:30am.

She was met by senior leaders of the Awami Leage and its allies in the ruling 14-party coalition, as well as writers, artists, academics, cultural artists, athletes and business leaders.

Road Transportation and Bridges Minister and Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader welcomed the prime minister with a speech during the reception at the airport.

Quader described Hasina as the ‘lighthouse of distressed humanity’ and the ‘mother of humanity’ for her handling of the Rohingya crisis.

“You have made us look brighter, you have made us feel prouder, you have made us stand taller,” he said, reports BSS.

“After the reception at the airport at 10:30am, she will drive through the VIP road (Kuril Biswa Road-Banani-Mohakhali-Jahangir Gate-Bijoy Sarani-Ganabhaban),” Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub-Ul Alam Hanif had said on Friday.

"Leaders of the Awami League and its affiliates will be on the two sides of the street from the airport to Ganabhaban," he had added.

Crowds of Awami League supporters were seen lining the streets near the prime minister’s office.

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has promised there will be 'no public sufferings due to the reception'.

The prime minister in her address to the General Assembly on Sept 21 emphasised a solution to the Rohingya crisis, urging world leaders to take steps for stopping violence in Myanmar that pushed the current exodus of refugees.

On Sept 25, she underwent a gallbladder surgery after feeling pain suddenly while spending some time with her son Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed Joy and his family in Virginia.

She, however, maintained communication with Dhaka and worked online.

Last Monday, she went to London, where her sister Sheikh Rehana's daughter Tulip Siddiq is an MP.
