A madrasa teacher has died as he was run over by an oil lorry while crossing the road at Kalyanpur bus stand in Dhaka’s Mirpur in the early morning of Thursday, taking the deaths in the city road crashes to two since Wednesday.

The accident took place around 4:00 am leaving Abdur Razzak, who hails from Meherpur, dead on the spot, said Manjurul Islam, a sub-inspector at Mirpur Police Station.

The body has been sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College & Hospital for autopsy, he said.

In another accident the previous night, an unidentified man in his 40s died as he was hit by a covered van in the city’s Paltan.

Dhaka witnessed two days of loud protests by students from Tuesday in the wake of the death of one of their fellows in a road accident in the city that day.

The students called off the protests on Wednesday until March 28 upon assurances by the authorities to take proper measures to meet their demands towards ensuring safe roads.

The same type of protests brought the city to a standstill for nine days in July-August 2018 on the heels of the death of two college students in another accident.
