Suspected drug trader dies in Cox’s Bazar ‘shootout’

A suspected drug trader was killed in a so-called gunfight with police in Habirchhora hilly area in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar early Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Hossain, 28, son of Nabi Hossain and an accused in four cases.

Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police station, said on information about the presence of drug traders in the area, a team of police conducted a drive at around 4:30am.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the drug traders opened fire, forcing them to fire back that triggered the gunfight.

After the gunfight, police found Hossain with bullet injury, according to a news agency report.

Later, he was taken to Teknaf upazila health complex where doctors declared him dead.

Police also seized three locally made arms, 2000 yaba tablets, and 12 cartridges.
