BOGRA, Nov 16: A good number of peasants of all the twelve upazilas of the district cultivate the water spinach (Kolmi Shak) round the year due to a high market demand.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office source said the leafy vegetable is being cultivated on over 425 hectares of land across the area.

Market sources said water spinach is being sold at Tk 20 to Tk 25 each kg in the local market, said farmer Mozammel Haque of Vataher village of Gunaher union under Dupchanchia upazila.

"I am farming the item on 20 decimals of land spending Tk 2400 this season," said farmer Hasan Uddin of Dawakola village under Sadar upazila. He said he has already made a good profit from it.

Some farmers said each maund of water spinach is being sold at Tk 700 to Tk 800 in the retail market while the wholesale rate is Tk 600 to Tk 650. They said they are satisfied over the present rate.

Sub-assistance agriculture officer of DAE Faridur Rahman said growers can earn much from the farming of water spinach on their lands. "We encourage the cultivators to grow the leafy vegetable on more lands", the officer added.
