2,222 people die with Covid-like symptoms in Bangladesh

A total of 2,222 people died with coronavirus-like symptoms in the last one year and half month across the country, according to a latest report.

Of them, 1,784 males and 438 females died from March 29, 2020 to April 12, 2021, showed the report prepared by a project styled 'Bangladesh Peace Observatory (BPO)' under the Centre for Genocide Studies at Dhaka University.

Apart from this, 10 people died with COVID-like Symptoms from March 29, 2021 to April 12, 2021.

On Tuesday, Bangladesh reported 112 new deaths from the coronavirus, the most in one day. Now, the death toll stood at 10,497.

The peace observatory project has prepared the report based on information from 25 media outlets, including national and local dailies, TV channels and news portals. However, this information was not verified from the field level.

To contain the sudden rise of the infection rate, the government imposed partial lockdown with specific rules and regulations from April 5, 2021.

Since then, local administrations have been vigilant to enforce the penalty for those who defied the lockdown rules and regulations.

From March 29 to April 12, 2021, some 3,510 people, businesses and institutions were fined while some 44 people were arrested, the report finds.

25 incidents of protests related to the COVID-19 pandemic were reported from March 29, 2021 to April 12, 2021.

The owners and workers of shops in the New Market and other shopping places in the area took to the street on April 4, protesting the government's decision to shut down all shopping malls and markets during the weeklong lockdown, the report reads.

During the period under review, Dhaka division saw 395 deaths with Covid-like symptoms while the number of similar deaths in Chattogram division was 735. Mymensingh division had 61 such deaths, the lowest record, added the BPO report.

Sylhet, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna, and Barishal divisions reported 102, 228, 95, 362, and 244 deaths respectively.

The top 10 districts in terms of COVID-like symptoms death are Cumilla, Chandpur, Khulna, Satkhira, Chattogram, Dhaka, Barishal, Rajshahi, Bogura and Patuakhali, as per the report.

The highest, 252 people, died with COVID-like symptoms in Cumilla district while Patuakhali saw the lowest 51 deaths, the report added.

Besides, Dhaka saw 91 deaths.

The BPO project has been regularly publishing reports on multiple issues with financial support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
