30 municipalities to get water supply, sanitation by 2023

A total of 30 municipalities in the country are set to get proper water supply and sanitation facilities by June 2023.

To this end, the government gave approval to the Tk. 17.51 billion project on Tuesday and entrusted the responsibility of the project to The Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE).

The approval for the project came at the weekly meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) at the NEC Conference Room with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.  

Planning Minister M A Mannan told the media that a total of 11 projects involving Tk 80.52 billion got approval of the committee in the day’s meeting.

Of the total estimated cost, Tk 33.89 billion will come from the national exchequer, while Tk 41.13 billion from the own funds of the organisations concerned and Tk 5.51 billion as project loan, he said.

Among the approved projects, seven are new and the remaining four are revised ones, as per agency reports.

Besides the water sanitation project, the other six new projects are

  • Development of Netrakona-Kendua-Atharobari-Ishwarganj District Highway with an estimated cost of Tk 7.10 billion
  • Improvement of Security System in International Airports involving Tk 596.2 million
  • Investment Component for Vulnerable Group Development Programme (2nd phase) at cost of Tk 3.17 billion
  • Development of Cumilla-Chandpur-Brahmanbaria Irrigation Areas with Tk 3.25billion
  • Strengthening Poultry Research and Development with Tk 1.23 billion
  • Construction of Chemical Warehouse with Tk 917.4 billion.

The revised projects

  • Construction of Khulna 330-Megawat Dual Fuel Combined Cycle Power Plant (1st revised) with Tk 39.19 billion
  • Further Development of Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (1st revised) with Tk 3.52 billion
  • Instalment of Laboratory for controlling the standards of Livestock Production Materials and Food from Animal (1st revised) with Tk 1.06 billion
  • Tangail BSCIC Industrial Park with Tk 2.96 billion.

Besides, the Planning Minister said, the implementation rate of Annual Development Programme (ADP) of the current fiscal year reached 67.97 per cent as of May with an overall expenditure of Tk 1.20 trillion.

During the same period of the last fiscal year (2017-18), the implementation rate was 62.81 per cent with the overall expenditure of Tk 989.78 billion.
