‘Amphan’ causes Tk 100m loss in electricity sector

Cyclone ‘Amphan’ caused a loss of Taka 100.0 million in power sector at 21 districts of Khulna and Barisal divisions as well as partial of Dhaka division, according to primary estimation of the West Zone Power Distribution Company Limited (WZPDCL).

“We have primarily received an estimation of Taka 100.0 million loss caused by the extremely cyclonic storm ‘Amphan’ that made landfall in the coastal districts on Wednesday evening,” said Managing Director of WZPDCL Engineer Md. Shafiq Uddin.

At least 40,000 customers of WZPDCL have lost their electricity supply after ‘Amphan’ lashed out at the coastlines of the country, he said, adding that a lot of electricity lines, cables, transformers and electric polls has been totally damaged in different coastal upazilas, reports BSS.

The power connection and line repairing works started on Thursday, he said.

A total of 581 electric polls were broken, 1,776 have been tilted and various electricity equipment including 490 kilometers conductors was disconnected in 21 districts, he said, adding that 114 distribution transformers, 996 piece of 11/33 kv over line insulitors were damaged, 2,306 poll fitting set have been out of whack during ravage of ‘Amphan.’
