Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Wednesday said BNP has initiated its attempt to create violence and terrorist acts on the streets in the name of movement again.

He said, "These days, the national flag along with bamboo sticks is being seen in the hands of BNP leaders and workers. What is the sign of this? Is it not contempt of the national flag?"

Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, made the remarks while speaking at a press conference on contemporary affairs at his secretariat office in Dhaka, reports BSS.

Blaming the BNP as the world champion in graft, he said the party was made a safe haven for corrupt people by changing its constitution.

The AL general secretary said the BNP never showed the courage to take action against the corrupt ones.

When the BNP leaders talk about corruption, the country's people laugh at them, he added.

The BNP leaders are now burning internally after seeing the implementation of mega projects undertaken by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government, he said, adding "The BNP leaders are suffering from mega frustration".

Reminding the past statements of the BNP leaders, Quader said the BNP leaders had once said that the Padma Bridge was being built with patchwork which would collapse anytime but they are now crossing the bridge.

About the BNP leaders' position on elections and the Election Commission (EC), he said the BNP conducted the elections of a farce since its birth.

The BNP snatched away the people's right to vote by holding elections without voters or Yes-No votes, the AL general secretary said.

Noting that the BNP's demand for a neutral election is a ridiculous one, he said although the party wants to forget its misdeeds, the people have not forgotten its past misdeeds.

Responding to the BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir's statement that 'the government has moved away from the people', Quader said it is not the government, but the BNP gets isolated from the people.

He said when BNP was in power, it failed to establish any development structure acceptable to the people and that is why a distance was created between the BNP and the people.

Quader said it is quite impossible for the BNP to minimise its distance with the people only through lip service.

Earlier, the chief representative of the Bangladesh Office of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) met the road transport and bridges minister at his office.

During the meeting, they discussed the progress of ongoing projects in Bangladesh taken with financial support from the lending agency.
