Police and administration knew about the pre-planned attack on Hindus in Rangpur recently, but did nothing to stop it.

Civil society members came up with the claim on Monday while addressing a press conference at the Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka.

They urged the government to take actions against those guilty while recommended the government to form a 'National Minority Commission' to investigate into the incidents of communal attacks and take measures in this regard.

According to a UNB report, the civil society members were presenting a probe report on torching the houses of Hindu community people at Thakurbari village in Sadar upazila of Rangpur.

They said the failure of the police intelligence agency is much to be blamed for this ‘pre-planned attack’ in Rangpur.

Denouncing the incident of the arson attack in Rangpur, they placed some recommendations to stop recurrence.

They urged the government to bring the perpetrators involved in the attack to bring to justice after identifying them through a neutral and transparent investigation commission.

They urged to provide physical, mental and financial compensation and safety to the victim of false accusations and take steps to collect those compensations from them who complained against them.

Advocate Rana Dasgupta said though a group of leaders using the label of government are playing role in this kind of incidents, government did not take any visible actions against them.

Executive director of Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST) Barrister Sara Hossain, chief executive of Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela) Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Advocate Subrata Chowdhury, Nijera Kori coordinator Khushi Kabir, Executive Director Association for Land Reform and Development (ALRD) Shamsul Huda, among others, spoke.
